As you are all aware, the last 18 months in the theatre industry has been an extremely challenging one. Even though the Government are in the process of lifting most restrictions for Covid, there are still massive concerns relating to the possible impact this may have with a possibility of 100,000 new cases per day, although hopefully less debilitating.
The committee held a meeting on 06/07/21 to discuss the future production of ‘The King and I’. The concerns highlighted during this meeting were:
• The show requires 32 children to take part, which as we are all aware will not be vaccinated and could potentially cause more risk of transmission to other society members, who may not have been fully vaccinated.
• All theatre insurance policies do not now cover for Covid. Potentially, if rates increase over the winter months to such an extent that the Government are required to inforce any local restriction back in place, we could risk losing a lot of hard earned money from our society.
• The attendance rate throughout rehearsals could fluctuate greatly during the winter with an increased risk of winter borne viruses, surges in all respiratory conditions, flu and Covid, which when setting a major show in a short rehearsal schedule, could have a significant impact.
• We rehearse within a school, which as we are aware could at any time refuse external groups entry due to increase cases of Covid, to protect the children.
With all these concerns it has been decided that we will defer the production, if possible, to 2024 after Hello Dolly. Therefore, both the Launch night proposed for Wednesday 14th July and Auditions planned for Sunday 18th July, will be cancelled.
However, it is not all bad news!!! We are really excited to announce we will be performing a special concert to celebrate KMS’s 60th Anniversary 1962-2022!!
We would like to invite past, current and new KMS members to our Concert launch night on Wed 1st Sept 2021, at St George and Teresa First School. We will share with you the proposed Programme and we will start rehearsals immediately. We will be rehearsing every Wed, as normal 19:30-22:00hrs and the occasional Monday for small groups, duet and soloists. We are hoping to perform the concert at the Core Theatre, with a dress rehearsal on Thursday 10th March 2022, evening performance for Fri 11th and Sat 12th, with a matinee and evening performance.
We are proposing that there will be lots of fun chorus numbers, to invite past principals to perform favorite extracts from KMS shows and to bring together past, current and new members to celebrate our successes.
The committee feels that by not performing a major production, but performing a concert, this is less of a risk to the society and its members.
We really hope you will join us in our year of celebrations and look forward to seeing you in September.
The girls from Annie will also be invited to perform some of the musical numbers from the show. They will not have to attend the launch night, but I will be in touch in September to invite them to a separate rehearsal on a Monday. They will only require a few to get them back up to standard! Exciting !!!!
